Have Itemized Deductions? Learn when you can file

The Internal Revenue Service plans a Feb. 14, start date for processing tax returns delayed by last month’s tax law changes. Most tax filers are not affected and can start processing their returns immediately, but if you are, beginning Feb. 14, the VITA Tax Centers throughout Navy Region Northwest will start processing both paper and e-filed returns claiming itemized deductions on Schedule A, the higher education tuition and fees deduction on Form 8917 and the educator expenses deduction. Based on filings last year, about nine million tax returns claimed any of these deductions on returns received by the IRS before Feb. 14.

People using e-file for these delayed forms can get a head start by visiting their nearest VITA Tax Center who will hold onto the returns and then electronically submit them after the IRS systems open on Feb. 14 for the delayed forms. However, most other returns, including those taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), education tax credits, child tax credit and other popular tax breaks, can be filed as normal, immediately.

As many already know, most Commercial Tax Preparation companies are currently advertising that they will file a 1040 EZ for free. However, if you participate in the TSP Program, you may not be able to file a 1040 EZ. Also, many commercial tax companies will charge a fee for claiming the earned income credit, with or without dependents, and do not include state tax return preparation in their free promotions.

Take advantage of the VITA Tax Program where our volunteers prepare and electronically file state and federal income taxes at NO cost. This service is available to all active duty military, military retirees, and their dependents as long as they have a military ID card. Additionally, VITA will have five tax centers open in the Region till 18 April 11 at the following locations with the following operating hours:
